Neuroscience Explains How Magnesium Soothes Anxiety

Humans need magnesium. As a party to more than 300 biochemical processes in our body, it’s one of the most important things, actually. Magnesium In Our Body

The five main minerals found in the human body are magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, potassium and sodium. Each of these serves an important function, often many. Most often we get these things from the foods we eat, but supplementation is sometimes necessary.

As we already touched on, magnesium interacts with 300 different enzyme systems in the body that regulate biochemical reactions. Some are crucial bodily functions, like regulation of blood sugar, protein synthesis, and healthy nerve function. We also need it for energy production, converting the food we eat into fuel for our bodies. Magnesium actually builds bones and DNA too. It facilitates the transport of calcium and potassium throughout the body, which helps with proper muscle, nerve, and heart function.

A magnesium-deficient body may experience heart trouble, since magnesium is integral to ion regulation, and one of the places that occurs is the heart. Arrhythmia and muscle cramps are two signs that trouble is brewing.

The brain is another place where magnesium plays an important role. If there isn’t enough to support the brain the way it should, anxiety may be the result.

Magnesium And Anxiety

How does this work? Through a process of cellular energy blood transport, magnesium is able to enter the brain. Once there, the first order of business is to regulate glutamate, which is an “excitatory transmitter”. As you might expect from the name, these transmitters keep things hopping in your brain, keeps things active, “excited”. Too much excitement is no good, so our brains have inhibitory transmitters like serotonin, and GABA, that mellow things out. As with everything, balance is key, and we need both to keep our brains sharp and our mood stable.

What does this have to do with magnesium? According to a study from 2017, magnesium promotes GABA activity, contributing to keeping you chill. Numerous disorders are a result of low GABA activity, like generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), panic attacks/phobias, and even dementia (e.g., Parkinson’s Disease.)

Evidence points to magnesium in helping to regulate the neurotransmitter serotonin. It also suggests magnesium helps suppress anxiety by reducing the brain’s concentration of stress hormones like cortisol. When we’re stressed, our body produces a shot of cortisol. This is a fight or flight reaction and isn’t necessarily needed. Magnesium restricts the brain’s assimilation of that cortisol by acting as a barrier between the brain and the body. How intelligent is that?
