Millions of people around the world deal with joint pain in one form or another. It’s often a difficult journey trying to find even just a little bit of relief. (1) Every case of joint pain is different and caused by many factors. But over the past several years, research suggests that the deficiency of a certain essential mineral could be contributing to joint pain. It also means supplements of that mineral may have the ability to provide some relief. What is that certain mineral? Magnesium.
Magnesium is a mineral that the human body needs for strengthening muscles, maintaining nerve and muscle function, supporting joint cartilage, regulating heart rhythm and blood sugar levels, and over 300 other biochemical reactions. (2, 3)
Though it’s one of the most important minerals your body needs in order to properly function, a lot of people are actually deficient in magnesium, which can manifest in a host of different ways.
Some common signs of magnesium deficiency include:
If magnesium deficiency isn’t addressed, it can eventually lead to more detrimental health issues and become more problematic. This is why it’s highly recommended to ensure that magnesium is sufficiently incorporated in your diet. (1) When it comes to joint pain specifically, there is some evidence that suggests that a lack of magnesium could contribute to joint pain. Maintaining proper levels in the body could also help alleviate joint pain, at least to some degree.
A study published in the 2015 Journal of Rheumatology observed and discussed the crucial importance of having a healthy balance of magnesium and calcium. Both minerals are important for a healthy body in terms of bone structure, muscle function, as well as joint cartilage strength. (4, 5)
Your body can’t naturally store magnesium, which is why supplementation and including good sources of magnesium in your diet is necessary. Magnesium makes it possible for calcium to do its job, so the two nutrients are an important duo. Through the creation of calcitonin, magnesium is able to suppress the hormones that are responsible for preventing calcium from doing its job. When these hormones are suppressed, your body can absorb and store calcium correctly and use it properly. When calcium isn’t absorbed and stored correctly in the bones, it gets sidetracked into the muscles and tissue joints, causing buildup often resulting in the body experiencing pain. (4, 5, 7)
It’s this crucial balance between magnesium and calcium where researchers found connections between magnesium levels and joint pain, specifically osteoarthritis. When your body is lacking in magnesium, calcium can’t perform its job well. (4, 5)
Another study from 2012 observed this same phenomenon, only shifting their focus to how race may be a contributing factor. They also saw a connection between magnesium supplementation and osteoarthritis pain. (6) These findings have become steadier over time indicating further that without magnesium, calcium can’t be absorbed properly - causing your body more trouble than anything. That is why it’s important to find the right balance between the two.
While keeping a sufficient amount of magnesium in your diet may not completely alleviate joint pain, it can certainly help. Coupling magnesium with calcium can especially aid in the absorption of both. Magnesium may also provide inflammation reducing properties and other benefits that could help do wonders for your body, even beyond its basic necessary functions. I don’t often align myself with products but this is one that I just had to share! My name is Michelle Toole and I am the founder of Healthy-Holistic-Living.com.
Some of you may already know years ago, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
I can still recall what it felt like to have my life change overnight…
I went from an Executive Director of a non-profit organization, running marathons, rock climbing, hiking canyons and kayaking to being completely bedridden and staring at a wall for 15 hours a day.
Of course, I went to see many doctors but unfortunately I didn’t find the help I needed. So, I had to set off on my own journey to learn my true path to healing.
I’d pretty much turned-over every rock trying to find relief for my pain, sleep issues and myriad of other symptoms…
Fast-forward 18 years.
I was determined to climb one of the true wonders of the natural world, Machu Picchu, the mystical home of the Incas in Peru.
It was there, after a grueling day when my feet, knees, legs, and lower back hurt so bad, that I thought I would have to abandon hopes of our next climb which was Rainbow Mountain! That night I pulled out a little spray bottle of “aceite de magnesio” that a friend had given me before I left on my trip.
What the heck, I thought. I was desperate. And I applied it all over my body before bed.
Because of the grueling day, I woke up expecting to be immobilized, but instead we were off to climb Rainbow Mountain and…I was totally pain-free!
I know it sounds impossible, but it’s 1000% the truth.
